Mentorship Program Applications – FAQ

Q: Do you have to be a member in good standing to apply?

A: Yes, you may purchase your membership online via paypal by visiting the shopping cart portion of our website, located in the top right hand corner of the page.

Q: How are mentors selected?

A: Mentors are selected based on the selected apprentice’s application and the challenges, goals and interests outlined therein.  Selected mentors may not necessarily have applied for the program to be asked to participate as a mentor if the jury feels that they are the best person suited to the apprentice’s needs.

Q: How should I send my application?

A: You may send your application to us physically at 1113 Marginal Rd, Halifax NS, B3H 4P7. We will not accept postmarked applications. You may also e-mail us your application to communicate@visualarts.ns.ca. We will not be able to accept applications that are hand delivered over the weekend, if you plan to submit your application then, please send it electronically.

Q: What format should my application be in to send it electronically?

A: All written portions of your application must be in one .pdf attached to the e-mail, images should be in .jpg format and can be attached to one or two e-mails depending on size. Videos must be standard definition and must be accessible by Quicktime or Windows Media Player.

Q: What size of image files can I include?

A: Each individual image must not exceed 500kb.

Q: Who can I use as a reference? Can I use a peer?

A: All of your references should be from established artists or curators, this may also include gallery directors that you have worked with in such a capacity. An established artist as outlined by the Canada Council for the Arts is generally, someone who is recognized as such by his or her peers, has made a sustained and progressive contribution to the discipline, is nationally or internationally recognized, and is still active in the profession.

Q: The person giving me a letter of reference is away, how do I include it?

A: The reference from an established artist or curator may be sent to us directly via e-mail to communicate@visualarts.ns.ca. Be sure your reference includes your name and the mentorship program in e-mail itself and we will attach it to your application.

Q: When will we be notified of the results?

A: Successful and unsuccessful applicants will be notified approximately one month after the application deadline.
