NSCAD University and VANS Research Internship Opportunity

VANS is celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2017 and as part of the year of celebration we will be publishing a special edition of Visual Arts News magazine.  In partnership with NSCAD there are two NSCAD student research internship positions available, one in the Fall and one in the Winter. The Research Assistant will assist VANS with the research and production for the publication. This is a terrific opportunity for students interested in pursuing a career in arts writing and publishing.  The course is AHIS 4600 Research Internship (3 credits) and requires students have completed 15 credits of AHIS courses and submit a written proposal for the opportunity.

The Opportunity: Visual Arts Nova Scotia will be celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2017. One of our many projects planned for the year is to publish a Special Edition of Visual Arts News. The issue will feature artist interviews, commissioned printed matter projects, and essays discussing the current climate in NS as it relates to the past 40 years. The intern will have an integral role in the research element for Special Edition and attend editorial planning meetings.

Position: This internship is perfect for those looking to develop research and writing skills. With guidance from the Executive Director and Publisher, core responsibilities of this position will be to:

  • Research archives specific to visual arts in the past 40 years (NSCAD, Dalhousie, VANS etc.)
  • Go through back catalogue of Visual Arts News and extract themes that are still relevant to visual arts practice today.
  • Publish findings or facts through social media.
  • Develop and write piece for publication (in print or online) specific to research findings.

Outcomes: Interns will gain experience working in a professional, non-profit arts organization and arts publication. Research will be used for publication and the intern will have the opportunity to publish in a professional arts magazine.
