Discussing the evolution of her practice and this series of paintings, Whalen explains:

Evolving Pictures shows the artist’s evolution over time. It is a discovery of self, an examination of how the complicity of life affects our art making process. Our art changes, our lives change, we arrange and re-arrange elements, we transform. We evolve while we maintain a common quality, our vision.

Marilyn Whalen is a visual artist from Truro, NS. She is drawn to the beauty of the mountains, rivers and forests of the Maritimes. To her the ever-changing play of light and seasons are reminders of passage of time and moments captured, of  joys and sorrows and of our place. Her current work focuses on landscapes and close- focused floral works in watercolor, acrylic and mixed media. Experimentation plays a large role her work, as Whalen looks for unusual ways to portray the usual; to show abstracted forms through the use of multiple layers of colors and textures, scraping through the layers to show line, energetic movement and dynamic color variations.

Located inside the Visual Arts Nova Scotia (VANS) office at the Halifax Seaport, since 2000, the Corridor Gallery is complimented by a historical legacy of Nova Scotia culture, simple yet modern architectural elements and an array of current cultural activity in the Cultural Federations of Nova Scotia office.
