SUMMARY:Artist-in-Residence: Re-Focus Sustainable Art - Submission Deadline
DESCRIPTION:Call for Artist-in-Residence: Re-Focus Sustainable Art Submission deadline: June 10\, 2012 The environmental impact of urbanization and industrialization has reached a critical point. It is now clear that our relationship to nature has drastically changed over time and that sustainable ways of living are necessary in order to deal with the complexity of the environmental challenges intrinsic to our subsistence; artists continue to fulfill a role of creating new forms of representations that illustrate\, embody and propose different ways of understanding our relation to Nature. Visual Arts Nova Scotia (VANS) in collaboration with the Ecology Action Centre (EAC) and the Khyber Centre for the Arts are hosting an artist-in-residency and public presentation of ideas that brings together contemporary artistic practices and current environmental research and engagement. SUMMARY:INFO SESSION - BEYOND THE BASICS: CONTRACTS AND COPYRIGHT
DESCRIPTION:Halifax: Visual Arts Nova Scotia\, 1113 Marginal Road May 8\, 2012\, 6-9pm. Instructor: The Artists Legal Information Society Presents: Christene Hirschfeld Registration Deadline: May 3\, 2012. Nearly every contract relating to the business of selling or licensing art\, or providing creative services\, necessarily involves federal Copyright law. It is crucial that artists and creative service providers have a firm understanding of agreements that govern their work. Many artists and creative service providers get into legal trouble due to working without proper contracts. Minimizing legal risk and avoiding customer conflicts are easier once you understand these types of contracts. This workshop will focus on both understanding contract terms in typical art business contracts. A well-crafted\, “user friendly” agreement will protect the legal interests of artists\, while at the same time assist in setting a professional tone at the start of the artists working relationship. Contracts to be discussed will include: Artwork consignment agreements\, creative collaboration deals\, model releases\, and licensing and commission contracts. SUMMARY:Artist Talk with Ruth Marsh
DESCRIPTION:As an extension of the x2: 2010-11 VANS Mentorship Program exhibition\, currently on view at Eyelevel Gallery until September 3\, 2011\, Visual Arts Nova Scotia (VANS) is excited to invite you to the artist presentation of 2010-2011 participating program apprentice\, Ruth Marsh at Eyelevel Gallery on Wednesday\, August 31st\, at 7pm. Ruth Marsh is an artist currently based in Halifax\, Nova Scotia. She graduated from NSCAD University in 2006 with a BFA in painting and art history. The last four years have seen the solo exhibition of four series of encaustic paintings. Recently\, she has shifted her practice towards a multidisciplinary approach with a focus on community engagement. In 2011\, Marsh received a grant through the Nova Scotia Department of Communities\, Culture and Heritage\, allowing her to expand her practice into the public exhibition of drawings\, miniature sculptures and projects in installation and performance\, she also received a Media Arts Scholarship through the Centre for Art Tapes. In recent years her work has dealt with loss\, absence and longing in the context of living creatures and the natural world. Bees in particular have held prominence\, first as a symbol of warning and mediation and later as a representation of the magical/spiritual transformation from living creature to holy relic. Fulfilling all of these roles\, bees have formed the thematic “connective tissue” of Marsh’s work\, giving her practice its united direction; this manifests most specifically in the poetic narratives surrounding their disappearance. SUMMARY:Artist Talk with Matthew Carswell
DESCRIPTION:As an extension of the x2: 2010-11 VANS Mentorship Program exhibition\, currently on view at Eyelevel Gallery until September 3\, 2011\, Visual Arts Nova Scotia (VANS) is excited to invite you to the artist presentation of 2010-2011 participating program apprentice\, Matthew P. Carswell\, at Eyelevel Gallery on Tuesday\, August 30th\, at 7pm. Matthew P. Carswell received a BA in French from Acadia (2006) and a BFA in Film from NSCAD University (2009). He resides in Halifax\, Nova Scotia\, Canada where he is involved with a number of not for profit\, Halifax-based\, artist run centres\, including the Khyber\, Eyelevel Gallery and the Centre for Art Tapes. He has a varied practice and a checkered past. Carswell collects and appropriates various materials for DIY projects\, often motivated by combating premature obsolescence and stunting the passing of time. Processes and performances are self-documented artifacts generated to preserve their ephemeral origins or re-purposes. His beard work navigates personal and cultural identity and began as an extension of his hermitical hoarding habits. Read more about the artist presentations here.

Since 2006\, the VANS Mentorship Program has paired established artists with emerging artists (not necessarily young artists\, but those at the beginning of their artistic careers) to take part in a ten-month long mentorship from September to June. Over the last 4 years\, the VANS Mentorship program has tailored to meet individual artistic concerns\, concepts\, working methods and ambitions for emerging visual artists (apprentices). Ambitious emerging artists were each individually paired with an established senior or mid-career artist (mentors) who helped shape the program with their individual skills and experiences. Visual Arts Nova Scotia is located inside the Cultural Federations of Nova Scotia office at 1113 Marginal Road across from the NSCAD Port Campus at the Halifax Seaport.
