Reflecting on collectivity and uniqueness, Li describes her work and process:

Geometric shapes dominate our manufactured landscape. Among these shapes, the ellipse appears in both organic and artificial spheres. It is the most stable form that continuously eludes modification and presents itself as an immortalized symbol. The zero signifies sincerity within nihilism while its ‘equivalent’ opposite, the one, signifies authenticity within positivism.

As I investigate this relationship, I’ve composed graphite and charcoal drawings within an ellipse on paper which are subsequently rendered in plaster. A dialogue emerges out of gathering these enclosed compositions between collectivity and the personification of each ellipse as a unique entity. This series is a homogenization of the existing binary values by constructing and deconstructing the ellipse, also known as zero.

Jocelyn is an emerging artist based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, working in jewellery and miniature sculpture. She approaches her designs through subtle, intuitive responses to the materials at hand and applies traditional jewellery techniques in her artwork. Her perception of concepts are rendered with tangible objects and illustration as an alternative method of research to writing.
