artist statement
A recurring theme in my work is the exploration of the complicated relationships between humans and our domesticated animals. Horses and how we treat them figure prominently, and I often look for tensions that are outside the traditional animal portraiture.
My still life paintings utilize the tack and equipment from the equine world as well as broken toys and the wooden horses I played with as a child. I concentrate on fragments of the still life and am intrigued by the interactions on the canvas that may result from the selective cropping of the still life painting.
