Roxanne Smith

Artist Statement

Roxanne Smith is searching to achieve in her photography a sense of place, timelessness, and quietude.  She strives to uncover the beauty that is seen in all things; that which goes beyond simply a visual description of the visible world, a beauty that encompasses the sacred in all things, a sense of wonder that objects in the world reveal for us.

Smith’s sculptural work consists of shadow boxes containing various assembled objects.  Smith arranges them singly or in groups, layered or clustered.  In a process of blending intuitive and deliberate decisions, she chooses these objects for themselves, for how they function together, without regard for their individual symbolism.  In the juxtaposition of these objects a metamorphosis occurs which creates a new symbolism that transcends individual meaning of the objects.
