artist statement
Nadine Belliveau rejoices in creating from the imaginary and reality. She researches the roots of her identity and their applications in her daily life. Her large paintings are based on her recollections of souvenirs from personalities that she has known.
Her work combines figurative and abstract styles with community content. With over twenty solo shows from 1971 to present, her themes research and present her point of view on topics such as women, celebrations, travel, nature, metamorphoses, rebirth, rhythms of life, interaction with visitors, life and death.
selected biography
Belliveau graduated from NSCAD University with a BFA in Education in 71. In 2010, her work was shown in a solo show at Grand-Pré National Park during her artist residence, at Weymouth Landing, at Unversité Sainte-Anne, Church Point, N.S. in November and December and at ARTsPLACE in February 2011.
Her 15 solo shows produced in the last 36 years are based on symbolism and are expressed in a figurative colorful style that have been shown at the Galerie Père-Léger-Comeau at Université Sainte-Anne, ARCAC at Annapolis Royal, Halifax, Lunenburg,and New Brunswick. Her work has also been shown in group shows in New York and the Maritimes. She was the recipient of the juried contest: Rendez-vous 2002 Parcs Canada with her painting Célébrations. She is the summer 2010 artist in residence at Grand-Pré National Historic Park with a solo show entitled Tu es pierre: fondations d’une identité.
She is founding director of the community gallery, Pére-Léger-Comeau at Université Sainte-Anne, has owned and run her own gallery, Galerie Belliveau and works closely with many artists associations such as AAANÉ( Association acadienne des artistes de la Nouvelle-Écosse) as secretary to the Board and ARCAC as member, Board member and Treasurer to the Board ( 2007-2010).
She has taught art both at the community level and at the university level, She has developed a web site, www.galeriebelliveau.com, where she regularly features invited artists.
