Artist Statement
My goal as an artist is to master the art of illustrating Canada’s proud military presence at home and abroad by showcasing its noble might, its international humanitarian commitment, and its efforts to assure global stability.
The images are created to signify notable activities of the Royal Canadian Air Force, Navy, Canadian Army, and Coast Guard from the Cold War era to post-9/11 Afghanistan. Working as a full-time resident artist in rural Halifax, Len’s main passion is re-creating historic events of our proud Canadian military heritage onto canvas. He researches an important aspect of all divisions of our military’s efforts including its humanitarian and peacekeeping history from the Cold War era of the 1950′s and 60′s to post 9/11 Afghanistan.

About Len Boyd
Len Boyd is a self taught artist that U-Hauled his life (as well as his Halifax born girlfriend,Patty) in late 2010 across the expanse of this fine nation from B.C's northern interior to call Halifax, Nova Scotia his new home. The move was for love and health and he has have never regretted one single second of it!
Len comes from a multicultural background. Born at the tail end of the baby boomers in August of 1966.
Len's mother immigrated to Prince George, B.C. from Malta back in 1964 and his father was born in B.C's Okanagan to a history of railway families dating back to the mid 1940's. His father retired from the CN due to illness in 1986 at the age of 56 and passed away in the early part of his 69th year. RIP. Both his parents immigrated to Canada from England in the early 1900's.
Len has many relatives that live in B.C.(including his brother,James) many in Malta, an uncle in Toronto and a cousin in Sydney, Australia. Artistically gifted in each of their own way.
Art has always been in Len's heart and soul ever since watching a grainy black and white vignette of Leonardo DaVinci on CBC television some 40 years ago. He told his mother that he wanted to paint like DaVinci because he was named Leonard just like him!
The spark ignited!
In his elementary school days, Len used to sell to fellow classmates for dimes and quarters, watercolour likenesses of old english countryside scenes taken from volumes of old encyclopedias kicking around the house. Len's teachers encouraged his activities and from then on, the spark took aflame!
After highschool Len dabbled in oilpainting on canvas a short stint until he experienced headaches from the thinner fumes and soon decided thereafter to try his hand at acrylics instead. This was a far better personal choice that reflected favourably on his sceneries and animal portraits that were created many years later. About the same time as his indoctrination into using the vibrant colours of acrylics, Len's interest in military aircraft at local airshows garnered a certain fascination within him.
The sleek look of these amazing machines soon found their way onto canvas, and by his early thirties Len was destined to focus his energies exclusively on World War 2 aircraft and modern day military aircraft depictions. The people in his small circle of family and friends responded with great interest. Many of his works given away as gifts.
These images spawned other 'machine' creations such as steam locomotives, automobiles and even a bulldozer! Recent works have also included helicopters and ships.
Working as a fulltime, resident artist in rural Halifax, Len's main passion is re-creating historic events of our proud Canadian military heritage onto canvas. He researches an important aspect of all divisions of our military's efforts including its humanitarian and peacekeeping history from the Cold War era of the 1950's and 60's to post 9/11 Afghanistan and portray a 'story' with acrylics.
Len paints preconceived images for sale, but will also paint a number of different scenerios that a customer would like to commision him for.
Along with his complimentary seascape and mountainscape depictions, including commissioned pet and animal portraitures, Len is positive that Halifax is the perfect surrounding for all of his works!
