Artist Statement

As an artist, my first love is oils. I never tire of the application, the layering, and the tones; the medium offers endless exploration. I often work from photographs - gathered in my travels in the U.S., Europe, and Canada - working through sketches to drafts that may hang in my studio for months or years until a final image emerges. Of course, monoprints are much faster; while the composition is labored, the final production is instantaneous and always surprising. In recent years, I have been exploring abstract expression. However, I still delight in the deceptively simple Nova Scotia landscape. This has been a happy journey, one that has no end in sight.

Biography

I have been an artist for as long as I can remember. I attended the Vesper George School of Art in Boston in the 1960s and then studied under Henry Hensche in the Cape Cod School of Art. I began with representational portraits. My work was strong and political. Later, I found needed peace in still lives and landscapes. Over the years, I have pushed myself to tackle new subjects and modes of expression, returning to school as needed, including the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston to learn print-making. Today, I can say that I have been a painter in oils for 30 years and a printmaker for 10 years. I also work in acrylics and watercolor occasionally. I've shown in galleries and small museums in the New England area for 20 years. I live and work in Boylston NS.
