artist statement

My paintings emerge from my experience of the coastline of Nova Scotia and the ocean which almost surrounds this province. Water is a big part of my life. I live on an arm of the ocean. I have sailed rivers, lakes, and the Atlantic coast for over 40 years, often acting as navigator. My purpose in painting is to express the view of ocean, sky and land as experienced by sailors. My works are about voyaging, navigating, weather, waves, ocean racing, and beaches. They often look straightforward and realistic, but unusual viewpoints, big skies and the inclusion of nautical charts are evidence of deeper meaning. I depict elements of the relationship between the ocean, land, weather, charts, and the new electronic navigation systems. To reinforce this depiction, I often incorporate thread or nylon line, and even actual beach materials, as well as the nautical charts.

    Hi,
Any chance we could use your art (Sambro lightx2) to encourage the kids at Ecole St Joseph’s Alexander McKay School to contribute to a time capsule about Future Marine Innovation? We are hoping to complete this in one Month!

Please let me know if we could use the image for a motivation poster for the event.

    Thank you!
