Artist Statement

My life is shaped, my spirit is sustained, and my artwork is inspired by the wild moody landscapes around my home. I see beauty in scenery that many people dismiss as bleak: a windswept barrens, a foggy beach, a granite headland, a snowy field, a bog. I make photographs of these landscapes because they evoke in me a passionate sense of place, and of belonging in that place.

I took up photography originally to illustrate my writings about wilderness travel, but over the past decade it has evolved into more contemplative imagery that promotes environmental, outdoor adventure and broader human themes. My image-making process begins in the landscape, but my images develop significantly in the digital darkroom where I use creative techniques to transform the camera’s raw materials into works of photographic art. The resulting style often leaves viewers wondering “Is this a photograph, or a painting?” – a question that always delights me!
