Biography

Gary Castle is a full time photographer and visual artist since 1968.  Fine Art images as well as photo collages are his central medium.  His images are in the permanent collection of the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, Nova Scotia Art Bank as well as private collections.  Currently an active visual artist living and working in Halifax area, Nova Scotia. He has been a professional photographer for over 40 years.  Graduating with a diploma in Photographic Theory in 1967, he began working at Dalhousie University as a bio-medical photographer.  Since 1981, he has operated his own photo-lab service and currently is employed at Atlantic Photo Supply.

About Gary Castle

GARY CASTLE has been a professional photographer for over 40 years. Graduating with a diploma in Photographic Theory in 1967, he began working at Dalhousie University as a bio-medical photographer. Since 1981, he has operated his own photo-lab service and currently is employed at Atlantic Photo Supply.

• 1996 – Solo exhibition of black/white images, “Eidetic Visions”, at Dartmouth Heritage Museum

• 1996 – Poem, “Silence”, was chosen to be included in the Canadian Poetry Collection

• 1996 – Piece, “Smoking Is Hazardous”, was selected and exhibited in Visual Arts Nova Scotia Far and Wide Show and later purchased by the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia for their permanent collection

• 1996 – received Joyce Barkhouse Writing For Children Award for “Water Over Stone”

• 1996 – received Honourable Mention in PWAC’s first magazine and newspaper writing competition for “Sagromedes of Venus”

• 1998 – art piece, “$800 Jacket”, was selected for exhibit in VANS Far and Wide Show

• 1998 – Nova Scotia Art Bank purchased his art piece, “Sixteen Is Not Ninety One”

• Received Nova Scotia Arts Council grant to produce photo show with Point Pleasant Park theme

• 1999 – Organized and curated “Point Pleasant Park, Interpretations of a Public Place”, a showing of eighteen artists at the Public Archives of Nova Scotia Chase Gallery

• 1999 – President Self Publishers Society of Nova Scotia

• 1999 – Co-founder and Vice President of Viewpoint Gallery Co-Op

• 1999 – CARFAC Regional Vice Representative (Provincial) (five year term)

• 1999 – Self published with Janet Kitz, “Point Pleasant Park, An Illustrated History”

• 2000 – Photo Collage Piece, “Creation”, purchased by Art Bank of Nova Scotia

• 2000 – “Smoking Is Hazardous” photo collage was purchased by Statistics Canada for their Yearbook

• 2001 – Solo show at Corridor Gallery, VANS, called “Prints In the Hall”

• 2001 – Solo show at Viewpoint Gallery – “Polarity”, photo collage work

• 2001 – Exhibited in “Power Of Ten” show at Secord Gallery, Halifax, NS

• 2001 – “Photopolis” – Participated in various shows during photo month

• 2002 – Exhibited in Group Shows at Viewpoint Gallery, Visual Arts Nova Scotia and Khyber Center

• 2003 – Solo exhibition “Transformation” at Craig Gallery, Alderney Landing, Dartmouth, NS

• 2003 – Group show “Coastal Impressions” at Birmingham Gallery, Halifax, NS

• 2003 – Group show “Between Black and White” at Birmingham Gallery, Halifax, NS

• 2003 – Annual Christmas Show at Secord Gallery, Halifax, NS

• 2005 – Black & White Portfolio (25 images) acquired by AGNS Permanent Collection
