Carol Morrison

Artist Statement

As a biologist and an artist, I am very interested in the constantly changing appearance of the world around us. I was born in England, and when I arrived in Canada was stunned by the magnificent blaze of red maples, yellow aspens and golden tamaracks in the fall and the interlacing shadows on sparkling snow in winter. The piercingly blue skies and clear light, which can be seen on sunny days throughout the winter as well as in the summer, are rarely seen in England. Tom Thomson's small panels, in which he interprets nature with vigorous and colourful brush-strokes, are my main inspiration for plein-air paintings

I was inspired by the stunning works of masters such as Whistler and Singer-Sargent to paint full-length portraits for my final NSCAD show in 2004. Since then I have been commissioned to do both full-length and smaller portraits.
